About the event
Manitoba Organics is excited to team up with Dr. Joanne Thiessen Martens for our second summer! We are revisiting the location from last year to receive updates and stay up to date on the research happening at this location.
What to expect
This tour will highlight the important connections between phosphorus and nitrogen cycling, including the response of alfalfa to phosphorus additions in an alfalfa-grass green manure mix. Participants will see how phosphorus amendments can influence legume growth and, in turn, impact nitrogen fixation and availability within the system.
We'll visit this year's wheat crop, grown following a 2025 green manure trial that received different phosphorus amendments. The site provides an opportunity to discuss how green manures contribute to nutrient cycling, the legacy effects of phosphorus applications, and strategies for improving nutrient availability in organic systems where phosphorus sources are often limited. We will also discuss soil fertility management for a perennial grain crop, as well as potential effects on soil health and water quality.
