Announcing this year's Keynote Speaker: Dr. Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith, Ph.D. Headshot

Dr. Andrew Smith oversees the research and farm operations at Rodale Institute and is passionate about growing the organic movement by providing science-based solutions to farmers and facilitating opportunities to expand the number of organic farmers and farmland across the globe. He has over twenty years of experience working in the organic industry as an agronomist, researcher, and farmer. While trained as an entomologist, his motive for entering the organic industry was to reduce the use of chemicals for food production that end up in our environment, food, and bodies. He now has the opportunity to support an amazing group of dedicated people working diligently on many projects to transform the food system and the way we farm to improve the lives and health of all people and the planet. He also continues to live and work on his own organic family farm.

Roundtable Discussions

We're changing the afternoon format this year! Instead of panel discussions with farmers, we're planning to have three rotating breakout sessions with various topics and speakers.

  • Julie Ellis

  • Julia Kulczynska

  • Shenali Madhanaroopan

Topic 1: Direct Marketing | With Julie Ellis

Julie is a trained baker, specializing in sourdough and whole grains. Recently opening up a stone flour mill business, Bloom Bakery and Mill, she uses the grain that is grown on her family farm. Milling organic and conventional grains but always supporting regenerative farming practices. She is passionate food, agriculture, and processing!

Topic 2: Navigating On-farm Data | With Julia Kulczynska & Shenali Madhanaroopan

Julia Kulczynska is the Extension and Outreach Manager at Canadian Organic Growers (COG). Hailing originally from southwest Ontario and achieving an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph, Julia made her way out to the Canadian Prairies in 2024 to begin her work with regenerative organic farmers as a coordinator for the Regenerative Organic Oats (ROO) program. COG’s mission to promote regenerative and resilient food and farming systems across Canada drives Julia’s passion for supporting farmer extension networks and communities forward, and she continues to provide support and advocacy for regenerative organic growers as the ROO program manager.

Shenali Madhanaroopan is the Environmental Programs Manager at Riverside Natural Foods, where she manages the company’s Organic Agricultural Projects (like ROO!) - collaborative initiatives within Riverside’s supply chain that strengthen organic farming communities and ecosystems while advancing our Purpose of inspiring a healthier and more compassionate world where access to good food is a reality for all. Shenali works closely with Riverside’s sourcing and procurement teams on qualifying and co-designing Organic Ag Projects and Organic Research, while also managing Riverside's Impact Data, including supply chain risk assessments, data quality frameworks, and the measurement of annual Scope 1–3 emissions. Shenali holds a Masters of Environmental Studies (MES) in Sustainability Management from the University of Waterloo and specializes in analytical research and life cycle modeling of organic production systems and value chains. She joined Riverside in 2023 and since 2024, also serves on the board of Ontario Organic, supporting the growth and resilience of Ontario’s organic sector.

Sarah Returns for her Seed Talk!

Andrew Smith, Ph.D. Headshot

Following great feedback from last year's attendees, we're excited to announce that Sarah Preston is returning for another presentation this year! A lifelong agrarian, Sarah is forever fascinated by food as a path to transforming our relationships with place, Land, and community. Based in a small town near Edmonton in Treaty 6 Territory, Sarah brings her past experience as a market gardener and her education in food security, development, and sociology to her role in creating farmer-centred programming. She’s honoured to support the seed sovereignty of Prairie farmers through her work as the Program Manager, Prairie Projects with SeedChange’s Canadian field program, The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security.
