At Manitoba Organics, we're committed to bridging the gap between consumers and producers. In doing so, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the amazing organic farms and businesses across Manitoba that are making a real difference in how we grow, eat, and think about food. It's time to recognize the people and practices behind organic food systems: from sustainable farming methods to the passionate farmers dedicated to nourishing our communities and the environment. We had the pleasure of connecting with Amy from Adagio Acres to learn more about their story, farming practices, and what organic means to them. We’re excited to share the insights and inspiration that came out of our conversation, and to highlight the incredible work they’re doing every day to grow fresh, healthy food the organic way.

Who are you and what products do you offer?

"Adagio Acres is a small organic grain farm in the Interlake region of Manitoba. We grow an ancient variety of oats called naked oats, which are higher in protein and require less processing than regular oats. Through the journey of developing on-farm seed cleaning and milling capacity, we also started to clean, mill, and package organic grains like cornmeal, lentils, and buckwheat flour from other Manitoba farmers who don't have the equipment to do so themselves. This allows a larger variety of crops to stay here in Manitoba instead of being shipped out of the province and out of the country to be processed before returning to our grocery store shelves."

Where can people buy your products?

"We are fortunate to be able to work with a number of retailers around Manitoba. Red River Co-ops, Family Foods, Sobeys, Safeways, Save on Foods, and many independent grocers carry our oats and other organic grains! Bulk products and our annual Winter Grain Bundles can also be purchased directly from our website (https://adagioacres.com)."

Why do you choose organic?

"We believe that there is a lot in our conventional food system that needs to change. We need to be putting the health of our land first, over the perceived needs of our economy and our industrial systems. Organic agriculture recognizes this need to invert priorities and helps to create a framework for farmers and consumers to follow. Choosing organic often means opting for decisions that are made with a bottom line that is more than a dollar value, and the more strength organics has, the louder and stronger our voice is in demanding change."

What is your favourite way to eat your products?

"I'm a hot-porridge-on-a-cold morning kind of person so it doesn't take much dressing up to make me happy. Food is so much more than just calories to fill the stomach, so when I have a few extra minutes in the morning to pick raspberries fresh from the garden to stir into my bowl, with a splash of local honey and milk, I know that simple and real is what makes a meal perfect."
